| Section 3: Instruction |
Eagles Canyon Raceway is committed to making your day at the track the safest and most enjoyable experience available in a track setting of this type. We feel that the first step is to make sure our membership and their guest are familiar with the basic operation of the track. We believe all drivers must understand our safety procedures and possess adequate driving skills prior to being allowed to drive on the raceway during a club session without an instructor. We feel sure our members will agree.
Therefore, all drivers must be “signed off” by the Club Director or Club Instructor prior to entering the track solo. Sign-off forms will be kept on file. Check rides with a Club Instructor will be available by appointment and will require a fee of $45. Please call 817-845-2664 for an appointment or 940-466-9775.
The check ride will include a discussion of session procedures, the paddock, flags and safety related items, entering and exiting the track, passing, and the line. It will also include a demonstration of basic car control skills, awareness of the track, flag conditions, and other drivers, and the ability to drive a line safely and recovery from off line passing situations.
For most of our members the check out will be a fairly quick process. If critical skills need some work, professional instruction will be available by appointment. Please call Bryan Henderson at 817-845-2664 to get set up with an instructor. Our Club Instructors are very experienced and well trained. They will be able to assist you if your skill level ranges from beginner to racer. Fees will be $45 per hour. Half day, day and group packages will be available.
Bryan Henderson heads up our instructor department. Bryan has 38 years experience in one on one real time instruction starting as a professional flight instructor in 1969. Bryan spent over 30 years designing, delivering or managing Air Traffic Controller training in one form or another including a stint as the Training Manager for a facility that controls air traffic over five states.
Included in Bryan’s experience is 14 years of on track, in car performance driving instruction with more than 1000 driving students. He was one of the founders of the Porsche Club of America (PCA) Maverick Region Drivers Education program and was it’s first chief instructor, a position he held for six years. He has worked as Instructor, Instructor Team Leader, Advanced Instructor, and Chief Instructor for six different Porsche and BMW Regions.
Bryan is recognized as an expert for in car instruction and has designed and taught instructor training schools for three different organizations where instructors learn the nuances of their craft. Bryan’s past students include, along with his driving students, more than 150 current driving instructors throughout the Southwest.
Bryan is an active racer who led the Porsche Club Region in podium finishes in 2006 and does race coaching as well as performance driving instruction. He is also currently the Chief national Steward for Porsche Club Racing.
Bryan has taught in several professional driving schools and instructed with notable pro drivers including Porsche factory driver Patrick Long. Bryan will be bringing several well known pro drivers to Eagles Canyon in the future for some very special schools. |
| 3.1 Member's Invited Instructors: |
A Member's Invited Instructor and/or Coach, training a new or inexperienced Member or Guest is required to ride with that student on track at all times until it is established that the student is capable of meeting Club standards. Member Invited Instructors and/or Coaches are required to confer with and receive the approval of the Club Director and/or Club Instructor regarding their student’s ability prior to allowing (signing off) the student to continue without in car supervision.
Member Invited Instructors and/or Coaches must ensure that their student is aware of the meaning of all flags as well as proper passing rules, zones and general track etiquette.
A qualified Member who will instruct a Guest or a member of his or her family must follow and adhere to the same regulations and procedures outlined above for Member Invited Instructors.
All “guest” instructors must familiarize themselves on the track prior to engaging in active driver education procedures. |
|
|
| Section 4: Track Etiquette |
The Club exists to allow Members the exhilaration of unregulated speeds and the pleasure of driving their own car around one of the nations’ most challenging and demanding racetracks. Eagles Canyon Raceway Club weekends are not races.
As Members of an exclusive private club, they are expected to conduct themselves as gentlemen and ladies remembering at all times that they are sharing the track with their friends.
Proper attire is required when on track. For street cars, a driver's helmet must be year 2000 certified (M, Snell, SA, FIA, etc.) or newer. These drivers are also required to wear closed footwear, long pants and a long sleeve shirt (cotton recommended).
Members driving purpose built race/track cars (not street legal) will be required to wear full racing equipment including year 2000 certified (Snell, SA, FIA, etc.) or newer, Nomex driving suit, Nomex undergarments (shirt, balaclava, pants and socks), Nomex or leather driving shoes and gloves. Race/track cars will also be required to have an onboard fire extinguisher and certified roll cage/bar.
Members riding street or race motorcycles will be required to wear full leathers, riding boots, gloves, and year 2000 certified (M, Snell, SA, FIA, etc.) or newer helmet.
Members driving karts will be required to wear a karting or fire suit, closed leather shoes and gloves, and year 2000 certified (M, Snell, SA, FIA, etc.) or newer helmet. |
| 4.1 Basic Rules and Procedures: |
In most cases the track will be run in the counter clockwise configuration, however, Eagles Canyon Raceway reserves the right to change the track flow to clockwise from time to time.
Pit Out – Exiting the Pit Lane always stay to the right of the Blend Line, which is on your left. Drive fast enough to join the track at roughly 70 percent of the normal speed of cars on track staying left of the blend line.
Pit In – Extend your left arm out the window with a raised clenched fist to signal that you will be exiting the racing circuit. Stay to the extreme right and enter the pits. Drive slowly. The Pit Lane speed limit is 30 MPH.
NOTE: Some cars do not permit the driver to extend an arm out the window. In such cases, the car's turn right turn signal will be used to signal Pit In. Other signals may be used when participating cars are not so equipped. If this is the case, the driver must notify the event official so that special procedures can be made known at the driver’s meeting and if necessary at Pit Out. |
| 4.2 Passing Zones: |
Passing is done in a straight line only and never in corners or just before corner entry. A car may pass only if signaled by the car ahead. Detailed instructions will be given before each event. Classroom attendance is MANDATORY AT ALL EVENTS.
Note: Depending on the type of car, overtaking procedures may vary. |
| 4.3 Passing Signals: |
The driver of a car allowing another to pass will extend his/her arm out of the driver’s window and point the passing car to the appropriate side as listed above. Note that the signal must be clearly visible to the car behind wishing to pass. A clearly visible passing signal given just before the passing zone is a critical contributor to safety.
If letting more than one car pass, a distinct signal must be given for each individual car passing i.e. for three cars, the signal must be given three times.
NOTE: Some cars do not permit the driver to extend an arm out the window. In such cases, the car's turn signals may be used, pass on the side with the flashing signal. Other signals may be used when participating cars are not so equipped. If this is the case, the driver must notify the event official so that special procedures can be made known at the driver’s meeting and if necessary at Pit Out. |
| 4.4 Passing Etiquette: |
A car wishing to pass should not follow the car in front too closely, especially when far from an approved passing zone. Tailgating and/or weaving behind the slower car does not meet the spirit of the Club and will result in being black-flagged.
When allowing a car to pass, it is essential to lift off the gas. Staying on the gas may result in two cars entering a corner side-by-side, which is unsafe. After passing a car, do not cut sharply back to the normal driving line but be prepared to enter the next corner off-line.
Do not hold up faster cars! It is not unusual for a more powerful car to pull away from a slower car on the straight only to have the less powerful but more agile car very close behind through the corner. If a car comes up behind you, it’s because that car is faster than you are. There is no other explanation. Slower cars will be shown a blue flag to inform them of a faster car wanting to pass. Slower cars should let faster car(s) pass at the earliest, safest opportunity. Ignoring waved blue flags will result in being black-flagged.
Blocking and weaving on track is strictly forbidden. Lapping with the Club is not racing and racing techniques are not permitted.
If you are the driver of a faster car, be courteous to the driver of a slower car who will let you pass at the earliest, safest opportunity. Following closely behind away from a passing zone is a serious breech of etiquette.
Each driver must maintain control of his/her car at all times. Cars going off track may make the surface slippery, while sand and gravel can and usually will damage the paint and bodywork of other cars. Off-course excursions, spins and/or unsafe driving will result in being black-flagged.
Drivers should know that Eagles Canyon Raceway Marshals are professionals and have been instructed to report cars that are driven in a less than a controlled manner.
Summary – Drivers on track with you are your friends and not competitors. Treat them with the courtesy and respect you feel is due to you. |
|
|
| Section 5: Black Flagged |
In the event you are black flagged, enter the pits slowly. Drive to and stop at the last pit stall (left hand side against the pit lane wall) and wait for a Club official who will meet with you to discuss the reason for you being black-flagged. Not all black flags are for driving errors. It may be for a mechanical problem or other vehicle safety concerns.
If a driver is black-flagged for improper driving and discussions with the Club Director and/or Club Instructor cannot change the drivers on track behavior, Eagles Canyon Raceway Club reserves the right to exclude the driver from further participation and possible exclusion from future club events. There are no refunds to Members or Guests under these circumstances. |
